Life can be so crazy busy, sometimes we don’t know if we’re coming or going. We put endless pressure on ourselves to perform, to get things done, to get through that to-do list. If we allow ourselves to be caught up in busyness all day long, we might miss the opportunities that appear when we stop to take a moment for ourselves, perhaps stepping outside to take in a few breaths of fresh air every hour or two, or three. Fresh air, change of scenery, a little connection with nature.
Recently I challenged myself to take a lunch break, to leave the office. That sounds silly, but it is something I just don’t do in a normal day. I usually fix myself a salad in our office kitchen, then eat sitting at the computer doing work. However, I know this leads to me feeling frazzled by day’s end, and sometimes resentful that I did not get outside. But really, who is at fault? Only me. Who is going to take care of me if I don’t? Yup, nobody.
So I am committing to getting myself outside for some kind of activity at least one lunch hour every week. At first I was resistant, rolling right into my usual routine, feeling I had to get things done and couldn’t take that break. Then I caught myself. NO, get up, get out, go hike! And I did. And WOW. It was fantastic to be outside in the middle of the day! It was almost too good to be true! I was hiking, feeling the wind on my face, sunshine on my shoulders, fresh air and happy spirit. I returned to the office feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the day’s work. It felt amazing. What a nice way to enter the last half of the work day. The afternoon breezed by and I think I was humming the whole time!
If all goes well, that one day a week will grow. And grow. Someday I would love to get outside mid-day everyday. Or at least close to everyday.
Treating ourselves well is the best way I can imagine to maintain sanity. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! What will you do to take good care of yourself today?
